<p>What is Patek Philippe’s biggest news this year? For many, I think the discontinuation of the Nautilus 5711 will be cake. The confirmation of the rumours in January shocked many, with people going crazy over the release of the olive green dial variant dubbed "The Last 5711". As we now know, this is not the last 5711. The name belongs to Tiffany Blue 5711. However, the real big news for me is the introduction of the new Calatrava, which is made extra special with a new manual-winding movement.</p>
<p>Automatic movements are more mainstream in today’s mechanical watchmaking. There aren’t many manual-winding (new) watches on the market, and I think it’s safe to say they’re filling a niche, mostly for enthusiasts. New movement developments tend to favor popular automatic movements, and you won’t see too many brand new hand-wound movements, except for heavyweight independent movements and some high-complication models. <p>Here comes Patek Philippe, ignoring the Economics 101 and dropping a pair of new time-only references featuring a brand new hand-wound movement.</p>
<p>Without a doubt, the biggest attraction here is the new movement: the Calibre 30-255. Patek Philippe’s naming convention for movements is basically Cal. (Diameter) – (Thickness), which means that the movement is 30.4mm wide (inner case diameter according to the press release document, 31mm overall diameter) and 2.55mm thick. Its predecessor, Carl. 215 PS, same thickness but 8.9mm smaller at 21.5mm in diameter (21.9mm overall diameter). As you can see in the pictures, the exterior design is completely different. Because of this, the small seconds subdial is closer to the center of the dial. This has been criticized by enthusiasts for years, and it’s pretty clear if you compare the 5196 to previous generations. The 6119 restores the traditional balance of vintage classic dials. I don’t know if this is the result of Patek Philippe listening lovers, but I very much welcome the change.</p>
<p>It is also worth mentioning that the 6119 comes with a display case back. This isn’t new to the collection, but it’s standard practice for hand-wound Calatrava to hide the movement behind a closed caseback. Why did they choose to use a clear bottom cover this time? My guess is to highlight the newly developed movement. Carl. The 30-255 is decidedly modern in construction and aesthetics, with the twin barrels having more usable torque and a longer power reserve. It also has a more compact escapement and gear train layout compared to the old Cal. 215 PS. <p>The most notable feature on the exterior of the watch is the Clous de Paris (nail pattern) on the bezel. The now discontinued Ref. <p>Now, the 6119 isn’t a simple homage to the past. The gold dauphine phone is reminiscent of the 96, but it adds a 3D dimension, with 3 facets per hand instead of 2, and the railway track minute scale ensures legibility. The hair-thin second hand combined with the sharp sub-dial, divided into quarters, is also highly readable.</p>
<p>Finally, let me talk about my impression of the wrist. With the larger movement, the case size has increased to 39mm, but the total height from the top of the crystal to the bottom of the cover is only 8.08mm. That’s a bit taller than the 5196, but you can tell it’s a big, thin watch. The wide (for a dress watch) 21mm lug spacing is typical of Calatrava, and thanks to its proportions, the watch offers great stability on the wrist. It may sound cliché, but this watch is very light and comfortable. Compared to its predecessor, the new Calatrava has a more daring impression with its highly ornate studded Paris bezel and three-dimensional hands. <p>The 6119R features a grained silver dial, while the 6119G opts for a vertical satin-finished anthracite dial and round grained subdials. The white gold case exudes luxury in a poised and understated way, with the contrasting finish between the main and sub-dial accentuating the presence of the seconds hand.</p>
<p>Traditionalists may see modern Calatrava differently, but new movements and shapes hint at a new era for Calatrava. To be honest, because of the rigor of the Calatrava collection, I always felt like I couldn’t fully understand it. I think the 6119 has a refreshing new look and is more versatile.
