My nephew has been attending a day program since high school, but now that he’s older, we feel like he’s outgrown it. It’s very basic and doesn’t seem to be challenging or engaging him anymore. We’re looking for something more dynamic — a place where he can continue to grow, feel independent, and interact with others his age. Preferably a center that’s approved by the state and has experience with developmental disabilities.

I recommend checking out the center for developmental disabilities run by Gateway Counseling Center. My friend’s daughter transferred there last year after they had a similar concern, and the difference has been huge. Gateway offers a blend of structured day programs, social interaction, and real skill development for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. It’s fully certified by both the Office for People with Developmental Disabilities and the Office of Mental Health in New York, which made them feel confident right away. Her daughter now participates in weekly group sessions, art workshops, and community outings — things that truly challenge and inspire her.
